cache_mem parameter on Squid

File: /etc/squid/squid.conf

Beethoven's Squid seems to give better performance when cache_mem set to a relatively high value. Currently, cache_mem is set to 1024 MB (1.5G RAM in total on Beethoven).

When value was reverted to 32MB last week and Beethoven was doing a poor job with high loadings.

2006-11-12: MOZART down

Mozart was down on 2006-11-11, probably at noon, the 2nd down within 2 weeks. It restarted on its own and got stuck before loading Netware OS.

System was restarted manually. Setup could find 1G ram only (supposed to be 1.5G).

20061112 - BEETHOVEN reboot

BEETHOVEN's performance is worsening. System was restarted in the morning.

squid.conf was modified this morning to see if the new setting can increase its performance.

- should install MRTG to monitor SQUID

Things to do when rebooting BEETHOVEN:

1. IP Forward:
- enable IP forwarding
- go to: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

2. ROUTE:
- route to 172.16.0.0/16
- route to default (FG-100A: 172.16.31.2)

3. Check if SQUID is running

Traffic Shaping configured on FG (public)

As written... this is only a test to see if it alleviates the traffic problem.
